GOPAL MUPPIRALA

President and CEO

Gopal Muppirala, President & CEO, has nearly three decades of commercial experience in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry in the US and International regions. Gopal worked for Glaxo, GlaxoWellcome, and GlaxoSmithKline for over twenty years, as well as for Bayer. His experience began in sales, and has covered a variety of commercial operations roles including marketing at the local and global levels, market research, new product development, and administration/management. Gopal, as the Global Commercial Director, led the transformation of a neurology product from a small contributor ($200MM) to the organization to a blockbuster with over $2B in sales, including the development of a key line extension, for which he holds a patent, and new indications. In addition, Gopal developed the step-by-step process for managing a global brand from discovery/development to commercialization for the GlaxoWellcome organization. Gopal is also the President of Compass Consulting International, based in Morrisville, NC, a provider of strategy consultancy services to the pharmaceutical industry. As the co-founder and CEO of Phoenix Cardiac, Inc., Gopal has transitioned the company from initial concept to a full development program, including meeting key regulatory milestones, while maximizing the limited resources available.

JAI RAMAN, M.D., FRACS, PH.D.

Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Jai Raman, inventor of the BACE Device is an academic cardiothoracic surgeon with over 21 years of experience as a consultant and attending surgeon, with clinical and operative experience in Australia, India, and the USA.

He has strong research interests in:
•  innovative treatments of valvular heart disease (beating heart and extra-cardiac treatment of Functional Mitral Regurgitation),
•  device safety (evaluation of safety and simulation for new cardiovascular devices),
•  translational technology with expertise in new dynamic chemical imaging (point of care pathology without excisional biopsy),
•  plate fixation of the sternum and ribs (an evolving technology now being adopted around the world)

He has performed over 6100 cardiac operations and 1000 thoracic operations, with special expertise in:
•  minimally invasive cardiac surgery,
•  surgery for heart failure (non-transplant and transplant),
•  complex valve repair and aortic surgery,
•  arterial grafting in coronary surgery and arrhythmia surgery

He has contributed to building expertise and teams in complex cardiac surgery at the University of Melbourne, University of Chicago, Rush University Medical Center and Oregon Health and Science University. He has published over 235 research publications, 2 theses and 2 books as editor.

KRISHNA TALLURI, M.D.

VP, Clinical & Medical Affairs

Dr. Talluri is a practicing physician with more than two decades of global clinical development experience, including roles as a principal investigator for several trials in different therapeutic areas. She most recently led product development teams at Johnson & Johnson and Talecris Biotherapeutics that include a cross-functional group of clinical development, medical affairs, biostatistics, commercial, and regulatory personnel. Dr. Talluri’s insight into clinical development comes not just from her work with the pharmaceutical and biological companies but also from her experience working in CROs, from Pre–clinical to Phase I through Phase IV trials, covering the entire spectrum of bringing a product to market. She has worked in clinical pharmacology and has a thorough understanding of the payer payee relationships through her work in managed care outcomes. She has several publications to her credit in leading medical journals. In addition to her experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, Dr. Talluri has practiced general medicine and emergency medicine in India and the Caribbean, and Psychiatry in the US. She completed her residency in Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center.

CYNTHIA PRITCHARD, PH.D.

VP, Regulatory & QA

Dr. Pritchard has over 35 years in the medical device/diagnostic/biologics industry and has brought more than 30 Class II and Class III products from research into development through clinical trials and manufacturing to market launch. She served in positions of increasing responsibility in R&D at companies large and small, integrating various assay chemistries with instrumentation and developing cell therapies. She has a strong Regulatory and Quality Assurance background, with extensive experience in FDA/IMDRF/ISO regulations, project management, design control, and documentation, and has written over 50 successful submissions to CDRH and CBER divisions of the US FDA, to Health Canada, and to European regulatory agencies. Dr. Pritchard obtained a BS in microbiology at the University of South Florida, a PhD in virology/molecular biology at Virginia Tech, and was a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow in biochemistry at Harvard Medical School.

KARL LEINSING, MSME PE

VP, Development

Karl Leinsing has over 20 years experience with design and project management of medical devices and automation. His areas of expertise include full life cycle product development, product conception, polymer selection, thorough computer aided design and analysis, molding and manufacturing, project organization, technical presentations and leadership, and cross-functional teamwork. Karl currently holds 19 patents (several patents pending), 5 design awards, and was listed as one of 100 notable people in the Medical Device Industry by MD&DI. Karl has a Masters of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire. He is a licensed professional engineer in New Hampshire and has lectured Medical Device and Manufacturing (MD&M) Seminars on The Science of Successful Product Design.

SREEKANTH BEERAM

Sreekanth Beeram is an entrepreneur focused on renewable energy projects, specifically waste to energy in South East Asia. Prior to this, Sreekanth was part of investment teams at VenturEast and Aloe Private Equity where he focused on Investments in the Environment and life sciences space. Sreekanth has invested in a number of early ventures and helped them to grow to the next level. Sreekanth has an MBA from the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering from IIT Delhi.

VIKAS SALUGUTI

Board of Directors

Vikas Saluguti is a seasoned business leader bringing vast experience across various functions and industries. His early career focused on developing the world’s biggest share matching platform POSIT and later as a Business Analyst at Deutsche Bank where he was primarily the interface between technology and business. Following an MBA from INSEAD, he joined the Global Banker program at ABN Amro Bank in Amsterdam and London where he worked in different functions of Investment Banking that included Fixed Income Sales, Corporate Advisory and Risk Management among others. He has also developed and owned a chain of Senior citizen care facilities in the UK. Since his return to India in 2007, he has been a serial entrepreneur and investor in a variety of ventures in the areas of IT, CRM, Digital Marketing Solutions, Renewable Energy, Water treatment and Healthcare. He sits on multiple boards of start-up companies while mentoring entrepreneurs scale up their businesses. Vikas holds a Masters Degree in Sustainability from Cambridge University (2012), MBA from INSEAD in Paris (1996), and Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Osmania University (1989).

Kavya Gopal

Kavya Gopal has 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry building long term strategies, launching multiple products and leading successful teams in US, UK and Global roles at GSK and Novartis/Sandoz.  She has worked in new product development across matrix teams, project managed global launches, and built advocacy amongst key external stakeholders.  Her breadth of therapeutic area experience spans cardiovascular, respiratory, anti-infectives, immunology, and oncology.  She holds a degree in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill (USA) and an MBA from INSEAD. Currently, Kavya is the Head of Specialty Business for Sandoz, UK and also the chair of British Biosimilars Association.

Dr. Mathew Williams

NYU Langone Hospitals, New York

Dr. Williams is the chief of Cardiac Surgery, Director of Interventional Cardiology, NYU since 2014. He is the first US doctor trained in both Cardiac Surgery and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Williams specializes in minimally invasive procedures and less invasive transcatheter approaches that avoid the need for open heart surgery. He has performed over 4,000 procedures using advanced transcatheter technology. Both Dr. Williams and his team at the Heart Valve Center at NYU has also performed the most mitral valve clip procedures in the region.
Dr. Williams graduated from Columbia University College Of Physicians And Surgeons in 1996 and specializes in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Lishan Aklog

St. Joseph’s Hospital, Phoenix

Dr. Lishan Aklog, M.D, serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at PAVmed Inc. since June 2014. Dr. Aklog is a Founder and Principal of Pavilion Holding Group, LLC. He served as Associate Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City focusing on the introduction of minimally- invasive cardiac surgery and establishing a satellite cardiac surgical program. He served as the Chairman of the Cardiovascular Center and Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center’s Heart and Lung Institute in Phoenix, Arizona and Boston Children’s Hospital. He received advanced training in mitral valve repair and aortic root surgery under the tutelage of Professors Carpentier and Yacoub in Europe as part of a traveling fellowship sponsored by the American Association of Thoracic Surgery. He returned to join the Harvard faculty as its youngest heart surgeon ever. Dr. Aklog is a leader in innovative approaches to heart surgery — including mitral valve repair, OPCAB using arterial grafts, minimally-invasive and robotic surgery and pulmonary embolectomy. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters and has been invited to lecture and operate throughout the world.

Dr. Aklog completed his clinical training in cardiothoracic surgery at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, He received his A.B., magna cum laude in Physics from Harvard University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Aklog received his M.D., cum laude, from Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Arthur Hill

UCSF, San Francisco

Dr. Arthur Hill is Professor of Clinical Surgery and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Dr. Hill has been on the faculty since 2000. Dr. Hill's area of clinical expertise is in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Hill is certified by the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and the American Board of Surgical Critical Care. His clinical interests include general thoracic, cardiac and thoracic trauma surgery. Dr. Hill is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, and a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, American Heart Association, California Medical Association, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Hill is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery Residency at the UCLA School of Medicine and his training in Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiopulmonary Transplantation at Stanford University.

Dr. Thomas Beaver

University of Florida, Gainesville

Dr. Thomas Beaver is a professor and chief in the division of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Beaver's clinical interests include the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, thoracic aortic surgery, minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve operations, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Dr. Beaver has over 60 publications, and his research focuses on making cardiac and aortic surgery safer through minimally invasive techniques and improved postoperative management. Dr. Beaver was a member of The United States Army Reserve Medical Corps from1991-2006. In 2004, he served in Tikrit, Iraq and Asadabad, Afghanistan and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Dr. Beaver received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Colorado and his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Florida.

Dr. David Lai

National University of Singapore, Singapore

Dr. Lai is a Venture Partner of Venturecraft Group. He is a medical doctor by training and an associate professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. He received his training in cardiothoracic surgery from leading institutions in Australia, United States and Canada. He is also a Director of Surgical Research and Development in the Department of Surgery, NUS. He advises several start-up enterprises in Singapore and the United States, focusing on medical technology.

He holds a MBBS from the University of Sydney, Australia.
